Wendi Maxwell, jazz vocalist and band leader, created the Trés Hot Jazz Band in 2008, working with students from University of the Pacific’s jazz program. Maxwell paired students with area jazz musicians, creating an exciting blend of youth and experience. Today the band includes younger musicians as well as mature professionals.
Musician Bios:
Wendi Maxwell, jazz vocalist and band leader, received her formal music education from Sherwood Music Conservatory in Chicago, and is an enthusiastic supporter of the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society’s jazz camp, where she has performed for several years. In addition to shows with her own straight-ahead jazz band and guest appearances with other local musicians, Maxwell has sung with the Some Like it Hot Band in New Orleans.
Stephen Coss, pianist and composer, belongs to a family with numerous musicians. He combined a classical piano education with jazz performance and composition at University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music, and is currently in a graduate program at the university. Coss teaches music at two area schools, and has private students in piano, trumpet, and drums. He also composes music for websites.
Rick Russell, saxophone, works as Music Director for a local high school. Russell’s parents are both musicians and influenced him musically when he was younger. He started playing saxophone at 10, and enrolled in college at the University of the Pacific where he graduated with a Bachelor’s in Music Education. Currently he performs throughout northern CA with various combos, swing and Latin bands, and solo artists.
Stephen Hicks, bass, comes to California after a long career in Kansas City playing jazz, funk, R&B, blues, and rock. He has toured nationally, including two appearances at the Monterey Jazz Festival. Currently, Hicks plays with a wide variety of bands in northern California.
Peter Hackett, drums and studio recording, has been a professional musician since the age of 16, playing with swing bands, big bands, jazz combos, and rock bands. A third generation local dummer and guitarist, Hackett has fronted several rock bands, and co-leads a group composing and performing rock-influenced music for children. Hackett and his partner have a recording studio and are currently producing the band’s first CD.
